From November 2nd to 16th, 2025, within the cooperation framework between the School of Chemistry and Life Sciences (SCLS) - Hanoi University of Science and Technology and the Institute of Agricultural Technology - Suranaree University of Technology (SUT), Thailand, a group of three students/trainees (Tran Do Quyen, Pham Thi Van Anh, Nguyen Hang Khanh Chi) from the Food Engineering Department - SCLS completed a valuable short-term academic exchange funded by IAT-SUT.
The journey not only expanded specialized knowledge in biotechnology and food technology but also provided comprehensive insights into Thailand's sustainable development model.
PART 1: SPECIALIZED TRAINING
The program featured intensive practical training modules under the direct guidance of lecturers from Suranaree University of Technology.
- Module 1: Extraction Techniques & Bioactivity Testing
The program implemented a complete research process, from extracting bioactive plant compounds (using maceration, Soxhlet, and ultrasonic methods) to evaluating antioxidant activity through total phenolic content and DPPH assays. Animal model experiments included Novel Object Recognition, Morris Water Maze techniques, and analysis of Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme (ACE) activity - a crucial target in hypertension drug research. The histology and immunohistochemistry practicum provided visual data on tight junctions in lung tissue, elucidating pathological mechanisms.
- Module 2: Food Processing Technology & Starch Technology
The course delivered practical knowledge in Food Processing Technology. The team was particularly impressed with the "Waste Valorization" session, where agricultural by-products were transformed into bioactive peptides. The bakery science and starch properties practicum proved equally engaging, clarifying gluten's role and the application of the Rapid Visco Analyzer (RVA) in food analysis. The working environment at SUT demonstrated both professionalism and strong support from dedicated lecturers and research fellows.
PART 2: PRACTICAL EXPERIENCES
The exchange provided diverse practical experiences that effectively connected theory with real-world applications. The team visited the Agricultural Academy and the Plant Genetic Conservation Project (RSPG), witnessing conservation efforts for precious plant genetic resources - fundamental to food security and biodiversity. Participation in the SUT International Colloquium and Academic Symposium on “Agricultural Technology for BCG Economy Development” provided updates on the latest sustainable development trends and research. Particularly impressive was the visit to KITS Sugar Corporation, which vividly demonstrated circular economy principles through its integrated industrial complex: utilizing molasses for bioethanol and bioplastic production while converting waste into biogas and organic fertilizer.
The exchange at Suranaree University of Technology served as a valuable transformative experience, creating dynamic connections between laboratory research and industrial applications. This journey provided comprehensive perspectives on sustainable development while opening new research and collaboration opportunities.
Sincere gratitude is extended to the School of Chemistry and Life Sciences - Hanoi University of Science and Technology and Suranaree University of Technology for facilitating this meaningful exchange. Deep appreciation goes to Prof. Neung Teaumroong, Assoc. Prof. Panlada Tittabutr and the lecturers and colleagues at SUT for their dedicated support throughout the training period. These valuable experiences will form a solid foundation for the professional development of all participants.
