The meeting between the University of Sydney (USYD) and the School of Chemistry and Life Sciences (SCLS), Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST), on March 7, 2024, set the goal of cooperation in education and scientific research, aiming towards the Net Zero goal. This significant meeting brought together key representatives from both sides, including faculty members and school leaders.
Assoc. Prof. Chu Ky Son, Dean of SCLS, began by acknowledging the strong relationship between the two Schools and the importance of collaboration in the context of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's visit to Australia to strengthen the bilateral relationship. One notable point is that Australia is currently a preferred destination for Vietnamese students studying abroad.
Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Huong, Lecturer in the Department of Environmental Science and Technology, SCLS, briefly introduced the history and development process of HUST. She also mentioned SCLS as one of the five newly established schools of HUST, as well as the organizational structure, curriculum, and research orientation of the school. Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Thi Anh Tuyet, Vice Dean of SCLS, welcomed the delegation from USYD and expressed hope for further cooperation, especially in research to achieve the Net Zero goal.
Prof. Deanna D’Alessandro, Director of the Net Zero program at USYD, presented on the issue of Net Zero. The term Net Zero means achieving a balance between greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere and removal of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. We are currently facing an urgent situation regarding climate change. Scientific evidence is clear: emissions are causing the greenhouse effect, and human activities are leading our climate in a negative direction. To address this issue, many countries, including Australia and Vietnam, have committed to achieving the Net Zero goal by 2050. Prof. Deanna D’Alessandro discussed the experiences, methods, and results achieved by the USYD in pursuing the Net Zero goal and expressed a desire to exchange cooperation with SCLS.
Prof. Willy Zwaenepoel, Head of the School of Engineering at the University of Sydney, was deeply impressed by the efforts and outstanding abilities of Vietnamese students in general and students from HUST in particular when they study and research at USYD. Therefore, Prof. Zwaenepoel hopes to continue receiving students from HUST to USYD so that professors and colleagues have the opportunity to nurture the talent seeds of HUST.
Representatives from both universities discussed specific forms of cooperation, such as organizing online or face-to-face specialized workshops, exchanging faculty and students, collaborating in teaching in advanced training programs, and particularly research cooperation towards the Net Zero direction.
The meeting ended on a positive and unanimous note, with the hope that both universities will continue to develop their cooperative relationship in education and scientific research to achieve the Net Zero goals of both countries.
