Department of Chemistry and Department of Chemical Engineering of School of Chemistry and Life Sciences (SCLS) welcomed representatives from School of Advanced Materials Science and Engineering of SKKU to explore academic collaborative opportunities. Discussions centered on potential partnerships in teaching and scientific research. Both sides expressed interest in future cooperation, including faculty and student exchanges, specialized workshops. Personal connections between former international students added warmth to the meeting. The aim of the meeting is to enhance scientific and technological capabilities, supported by the South Korean government's desire for collaboration.
The distance between Seoul, the capital of South Korea, and Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, measures approximately 2,739km as the crow flies. However, geographical distance is not a significant barrier for SKKU to engage with SCLS as an academic partner. On February 20, 2024, professors representing the School of Advanced Materials Science and Engineering of SKKU visited SCLS to discuss and explore opportunities for collaboration in teaching and research with the leaders of the Departments of Chemistry and Department of Chemical Engineering at SCLS.
Welcoming representatives from a prestigious Korean university, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dang Trung Dung, Head of the Chemistry Department at SCLS, emphasized that fostering collaborative relationships in education and scientific research between Vietnam and South Korea educational institutions is an inevitable trend due to the close cooperative ties in recent years between two nations and the historical and cultural affinity between two countries. Particularly, in late 2023, the governments of Vietnam and South Korea officially elevated their bilateral relations to comprehensive strategic partnerships.
Assoc. Prof. Dung also proudly introduced the establishment process of SCLS, its organizational structure, portfolio of academic programs, as well as its domestic and international partners. He proposed directions for future cooperation between the two parties, such as organizing specialized workshops, faculty and student exchanges, and collaborative teaching in the Talented Engineer training program... Assoc. Prof. Dung expressed his hope that following today's meeting, SKKU would officially become part of SCLS's academic partner network.
Professor Sunkook Kim, Vice President of Sungkyunkwan University and head of the Advanced Materials Science and Engineering School delegation, showed particular interest in the information exchanged. He had the honor of introducing the prestigious institution where he is teaching. Sungkyunkwan University, founded in 1398, is the oldest educational institution in South Korea. With a glorious history spanning 626 years, SKKU consistently ranks at the forefront of higher educational institutions, with outstanding achievements and rankings. Especially since 1996, with sponsorship from the Samsung Group, SKKU has risen to become one of the world's leading universities. In 2023, the university ranked fifth in South Korea and 23rd among Asian schools, according to Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
Members of the delegation, Professors Han-Ki Kim and Junyoung Mun, emphasized that SKKU has achieved 1st place in overall university employment rate for 8 consecutive years. According to the '2022 Higher Education Institution Graduates Employment Statistics' disclosed through the University Informant or Alimi, SKKU recorded a 76.5% employment rate. To achieve this success, SKKU drives research and teaching directions closely aligned with industry requirements. Therefore, in research collaboration and academic exchange with SCLS, the professors of SKKU's School of Advanced Materials Science and Engineering will be wholeheartedly committed to assisting faculty members and students of SCLS, helping them become truly talented educators and professionals who contribute significantly to society.
The meeting between the two parties became even more intimate as the Korean professors recognized that the members of the Vietnamese delegation were all former international students who had studied and researched in their home country. Overcoming geographical barriers and language differences, these Korean alumni, now holding managerial positions at SCLS, fondly reminisced about the beautiful years of living and working in a foreign country like South Korea. Therefore, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Head of the Chemistry Department, proposed a short-term student exchange program to provide Vietnamese students in general and SCLS students in particular with the opportunity to access high-quality education in Korea. Additionally, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Thi Bich Thuy, leader of the Electrochemistry and Energy Conversion group and lecturer at SCLS, who has many former students currently studying and researching at SKKU, hopes to continue and expand the excellent relationship between the two departments by exchanging faculty with SKKU. Sending SCLS faculty members to work in modern research laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art facilities at SKKU is a prerequisite for joint research publications and collaborative scientific work between the two parties. Assoc. Prof. Dang Trung Dung believes that future cooperation in education and scientific research between the School of Advanced Materials Science and Engineering (SKKU) and the Department of Chemistry and Department of Chemical Engineering (SCLS) will undoubtedly yield fruitful results, as this is also the desire of the South Korean government to support Vietnam in enhancing its scientific and technological capabilities.
