Deputy Head of Department: Associate Professor, PhD. Do Khac Uan
The Department is responsible for teaching subjects in the Bachelor, Engineering, and Master training programs of Environmental Engineering (EV1) and Environmental and Natural Resources Management (EV2) and the PhD program in Environmental Engineering.
There are five professional groups established according to the development orientations of the Faculty:
- Environmental Technology
- Pollution Control
- Environmental Science
- Environmental Management
- Energy - Environment and Climate Change
Center for Environmental Science and Technology (CEST) was established in 1994 under the Department of Inorganic-Electrochemical-Environmental, carrying out scientific topics with the determination to open a training major in Environmental Science and Technology at Hanoi University of Science and Technology to meet the urgent requirements of the country's industrialization. The Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (INEST) was established based on the CEST center (Decision No. 2995/QD-BGD-DT-TCCB of the Ministry of Education and Training dated September 4, 1998). Associate Professor. Dr. Dinh Van Sam was appointed as the first Director of the INEST.
The INEST has quickly completed the procedures to open specialized training at all training levels: Undergraduate, Graduate, and Doctoral. At the same time, the INEST also actively develops research topic outlines to participate in scientific research programs at the State, Ministerial, and local levels, most notably the State-level Project KC 08.09. "Research on the scientific and practical basis for developing policies and measures to solve environmental problems in Vietnamese craft villages" was carried out in 2001 - 2003. The INEST received the first project, "Infrastructure Investment, to support Research and Development of Environmental Technology," to improve the quality of training and research of the INEST and support the implementation of internationally sponsored projects. Besides, the INEST also has well-developed environmental services such as waste treatment, environmental impact assessment, and environmental monitoring. The Institute has built a solid foundation for its essential missions: training, scientific research, and environmental services. The Institute has expanded international cooperation with universities and research institutes in the region through internationally funded projects, contributing significantly to forming, maintaining, and developing cooperation networks between many countries. Domestic and foreign technical universities promptly share scientific research results in the field of environment. Work closely with state agencies, businesses, and various associations to take advantage of the activities of internationally funded projects and state-level projects to promote the implementation of current positive trends of the world in solving environmental problems in real life towards sustainable development of the country.
INEST is one of the leading prestigious addresses in Vietnam for undergraduate and postgraduate training, with two majors: Environmental Engineering and Natural Resources and Environmental Management. At the doctoral level, there is a major in Environmental Engineering. By the end of the 2022-2023 school year, we have trained 1558 engineers, 673 masters, and 22 PhDs. We are a trusted partner with domestic and foreign universities, research institutes, and international organizations. In addition, the Institute also organizes many short-term training courses on the management and operation of waste treatment systems, cleaner production, environmental monitoring, environmental quality analysis, and environmental impact assessment for staff working at enterprises and environmental management agencies at all levels.
Since its establishment, the Institute has completed 03 state or equivalent investment projects, including: the Center for Environmental Monitoring and Industrial Pollution Control (2000), Industrial Research and Implementation Laboratory environmental technology (2000-2006), Advanced Waste Recycling Technology Research Laboratory (2015 - 2017), implementing 05 State-level projects, over 100 Ministry/Province/City level projects, many projects Grassroots funding, 02 national level projects funded by Switzerland through UNIDO, 20 small projects funded by UN organizations, Canada, Korea, Japan, USA, UK.
INEST is a pioneer and leader in numerous research fields. It has spearheaded the implementation of new issues in environmental protection, including cleaner production at industrial facilities, research and problem-solving in Vietnamese craft villages, and recycling electronic waste, which has set the benchmark for environmental stewardship.
A clear vision will guide our scientific research activities. We will focus on developing and promoting environmentally friendly technologies, integrated technologies for waste treatment, and innovative approaches to reuse and recycle waste. Our aim is to manufacture materials that effectively treat pollution and advance the field of environmental science.
The INEST cooperates closely with environmental training and research units at home and abroad to exchange experiences, coordinate research, and train human resources. Since its establishment, the INEST has actively contributed to environmental protection activities, been highly appreciated by ministries/sectors, and won the trust of domestic and international partners. The INEST has been awarded Certificates of Merit by the Ministry of Education and Training, the Vietnam Education Union, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. The INEST and 03 individual members had been awarded the "Vietnam Environment Award".
With a solid foundation, experiences, and achievements over the past 25 years, the current generation of staff from the Department of Environmental Science and Technology will adapt well to Hanoi University of Science and Technology's new context, overcome all challenges, and continue its mission in the new phase of building and developing the School of Chemistry and Life Sciences.
