1. General Introduction
The Department of Paper and Dyeing Technology was established in 1968 at the Light Industry Branch of Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST). The first cohort of engineering graduates was from Class 11. In 1977, when the Light Industry Branch merged back into HUST, the Paper group was incorporated into the Department of Chemical Engineering. During this time, under the leadership of the Faculty of Chemical Engineering, paper engineering staff successfully built and operated a paper production workshop to serve training needs and supply printing and writing paper for the university.
In 1980, the Paper group was transferred to the Department of Polymer Science within the Faculty of Chemical Engineering. In 2006, the Department of Cellulose & Paper Technology was newly established, separated from the Department of Organic and Petrochemical Technology. Since 2019, it merged with the Polymer Center to form the Polymer - Composite and Paper Technology Center, offering two majors: Polymer - Composite Engineering and Cellulose - Paper Engineering. By 2023, the Paper and Packaging Technology Group was established under the Faculty of Chemical Engineering, School of Chemistry and Life Sciences, HUST. Currently, the group consists of 3 Associate Professors and 3 PhDs, and is the largest training base in Vietnam for Bachelors and Engineers in the paper industry.
Paper and Packaging Technology is a major that focuses on the processes involved in producing paper and paper packaging products; cellulose derivatives used in food, medicine, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, defense, and environmental applications—meeting essential needs in daily life and industry.

The program equips students with foundational knowledge in:
- Wood chemistry and biomass; cellulose and basic chemicals; new materials, natural-origin nanomaterials; cellulose derivatives used in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals;
- The full technology process and equipment used in producing pulp and paper (printing paper, writing paper, packaging paper, tissue paper, toilet paper) and paper packaging;
- Quality control and management of raw materials and products in pulp, paper, and packaging production; environmental treatment in the paper industry;
- Project planning, pulp and paper plant design; laboratory skills, industrial internships; production management, presentation, and teamwork skills.
Job positions after graduation:
- Managers, workshop supervisors, executive directors, technical and production leads at paper and packaging factories (over 30 large-scale companies; nearly 400 medium and small-scale enterprises; including 12 foreign-invested companies from Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Japan, Germany, Thailand);
- Sales representatives, customer service staff, technicians at companies supplying materials, chemicals, equipment, and products for the paper and packaging industry;
- Researchers at institutes, inspection agencies, government authorities under the Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of National Defense, General Department of Customs, Directorate for Standards, Metrology and Quality, Ministry of Industry and Trade, etc.;
- Further studies (Master's and PhD) domestically and abroad in fields such as chemistry, polymer materials, nanomaterials, bio-based materials, food additives, and environmental treatment—leading to positions as researchers and lecturers in research institutes and universities.
