That's the sharing from Prof. Graziella Turdean, Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Babeș-Bolyai University Romania (UBB), when visiting Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) and signing a Memorandum of Understanding between the two universities.
On February 26, 2024, the signing ceremony between UBB and HUST took place successfully, marking a significant milestone in the collaboration between the two higher education institutions.
At the beginning of the ceremony, Associate Professor Nguyen Hong Lien - Vice Dean of the School of Chemistry and Life Sciences (SCLS), HUST, extended a warm welcome to the representative of UBB, appreciating the longstanding cooperative relationship between the two sides and hoping that Prof. Turdean's trip would open up new avenues for future collaboration.
Professor Turdean sincerely thanked SCLS for the warm reception. She felt honored to visit and work at HUST.
With the presence of leadership representatives, numerous faculty members, and students, the cooperation agreement between the two universities: the School of Chemistry and Life Sciences (HUST) and the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (UBB), along with specific agreements on cooperation between the three departments: the Department of Chemical Engineering, the Department of Chemistry (HUST), and the Department of Chemical Engineering (UBB), has been carried out. With the goal of strengthening and developing scientific relations, promoting collaborative activities in training as well as enhancing understanding between the two sides, specific cooperative activities such as promoting the exchange of lecturers, students, researcher, and administrative staff; recognition of credits in education; cooperation in scientific research, organization of joint workshops, summer courses; and joint registration for sponsored programs as well as collaboration with non-profit organizations have been outlined in the MOU. Prof. Graziella Turdean, Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (UBB), and Associate Professor Dang Trung Dung, Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering (SCLS), are responsible for implementing the agreements over the next 5 years under the supervision of the Deans of both Schools and the Rectors of the two universities.
To enhance information exchange, identify commonalities, and provide directions for realizing the agreements, Dr. Nguyen Hoang Chung, representing the Department of Chemical Engineering, introduced HUST as well as its notable achievements throughout its establishment and development process. Dr. Chung also summarized the establishment process of SCLS, its organizational structure, the list of training programs, and its domestic and international partners.
Prof. Turdean continued the session with a concise presentation on UBB. UBB is one of the largest and most comprehensive higher education institution in Romania. Located in Cluj, a tranquil city in North West Romania, also home to more students than any other city in the country, UBB has approximately 50,000 students (according to the university's statistics in 2021). Multiculturalism is one of the core pillars of UBB. UBB provides education in three main languages (Romanian, Hungarian, German) and offers many training programs in other languages. Additionally, UBB is a member of the International Association of Universities, the Association of European Research Universities, Eutopia, the Santander Group, the Francophonie Agency, and the European University Association. This enables students at the university to easily participate in exchange programs within the alliances.
During this first visit to Asia, Prof. Turdean hoped to find more "seeds of talent" at HUST. She recalled successful students she has "nurtured," such as Pham Thi Thuy Ngan, Ngo Viet Cuong, Ho Anh Tai - students of the Chemical Engineering Department, K57, and doctoral student Ngo Thi Thu Hien - who successfully defended her doctoral thesis amid the pandemic outbroke. She remembered the efforts, diligence, and resilience of these students. Therefore, she and her family cherished Vietnamese students as family members. She is delighted to meet again with Assoc.Prof. Phan Trung Nghia, Assoc.Prof. Vu Anh Tuan, Assoc.Prof. Pham Thi Thanh Huyen, and Assoc.Prof. Hoang Thi Bich Thuy, the faculty members who had been engaged in research exchanges at the Department of Chemical Engineering, UBB, since 2016.
Assoc.Prof. Pham Thi Thanh Huyen, Head of the Student Affairs Committee, HUST, encourages students to participate in exchange programs, as the premise for this is a scholarship fund worth 3 billion VND that HUST plans to allocate to students going abroad for exchange programs. Especially, if there is an opportunity to study at UBB, students will be exempt from tuition fees and only have to pay 40 EUR if staying in dormitories, and about 200 EUR for monthly living expenses.
Within the framework of the working program, Prof. Turdean also gave a scientific presentation on the topic: "Advanced materials applied in electrochemical engineering and variable polarity electrode fabrication." Her presentation attracted attention and sparked numerous questions and discussions from the attending faculty members and students.
Before the signing session, Prof. Turdean engaged in sideline activities such as visiting laboratories, touring Hanoi's Old Quarter, and meeting and discussing with HUST faculty members at the offices of the two departments: the Department of Chemical Engineering and the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry and Life Sciences.
It is hoped that despite differences in language, culture, and geography, with the good tradition of cooperation between the two countries, the two peoples, the people of UBB and HUST will share a spirit of passion for science and the responsibility of "growing people" together. The cooperation between the two universities in general, between the departments in particular, will continue to develop, providing the best learning and research opportunities for students, learners, and faculty members of both universities.
